The air inside your home is two to five times more polluted than the air outside.
That finding, from the Environmental Protection Agency’s own research, catches most people off guard. We spend roughly 90% of our time indoors, breathing air that carries dust, pet dander, volatile organic compounds from furniture and cleaning products, and, during wildfire season in certain areas, fine particulate matter that seeps through walls.

Why It Matters
|
|
Poor indoor air quality is not just uncomfortable. A 2022 study published in The Lancet Planetary Health linked long-term exposure to indoor particulate matter (PM2.5) with increased risk of respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. For the 25 million Americans living with asthma and the 50 million dealing with allergies (American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, 2023), the air inside their homes can be a daily trigger.
Air purifiers are one of the most effective tools for reducing indoor pollutants. But not all air purifiers are created equal, and understanding a few key specs makes the difference between a machine that works and one that just hums.

What to Look For
|
|
Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) measures how quickly a purifier filters smoke, dust, and pollen from the air. Higher CADR means faster filtration. A good rule of thumb:
your purifier's smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's square footage.
Then there is the filter itself. True HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. That includes pollen, mold spores, and most bacteria. "HEPA-like" or "HEPA-style" filters sound similar but do not meet the same standard as they can miss significantly more fine particles.
Always look for "True HEPA" on the label.

The Part Most People Miss
|
|
For customers with a diagnosed respiratory condition like asthma, chronic allergies, COPD, or other qualifying conditions, air purifiers may be HSA/FSA eligible. That means you could save about 30% on a purchase you were already considering, using pre-tax health funds that might otherwise go unused.
Three brands on the Truemed marketplace stand out in this category:
Sans (compact, high-CADR units ideal for bedrooms),
Blueair (Swedish-engineered filtration trusted by hospitals and homes alike), and
Molekule (PECO technology that goes beyond HEPA to destroy pollutants at a molecular level).
Your home's air quality is one of the few health factors you can control completely. And if you have HSA/FSA funds available, the cost of taking action just dropped significantly.
