After starting out in musical theatre and transitioning into retail at Cynthia Rowley and locally at Candlefish, she’s found her perfect fit at Hampden. Johanna’s style is effortless, playful, and classic—she’s a self-proclaimed jumpsuit devotee who loves unexpected color pairings and is currently drawn to rich browns for Spring. Inspired by cool-girl icons and guided by the belief that fashion should build confidence, her picks are all about pieces that feel as good as they look.

Where are you from originally, and what brought you to Charleston?
I’m one of the rare breeds who was born and raised in Charleston. When I was 18, I moved up to NYC and spent about a decade there, and then came back home to Charleston!

What were you doing before joining Hampden?
My first life was doing musical theatre in New York. That career kind of organically transitioned to fashion and retail, first at Cynthia Rowley, and then I spent 6 years at Candlefish (right down the block from us) and eventually found myself at Hampden!

What drew you to Hampden — and what are you most excited about in your new role?
There really isn’t anything like Hampden in Charleston. For people who love fashion, it feels like the ultimate place to be. The range of designers is unmatched, and the curated assortment is really special.

How would you describe your personal style in three words?
Effortless, playful, classic.

What’s your go-to outfit that never fails you?
I’m a jumpsuit girlie. Give me an oversized jumpsuit and I’m happy.

Who is your ultimate style icon?
This is hard. I’m gonna go with Alexa Chung. She’s just so cool and fun and easy!!!

What trend are you currently loving?
Loving brown for spring!

What’s one fashion rule you love to break?
I love pairing black and navy or black and brown - colors that traditionally aren’t paired.

Coffee order of choice?
If it’s not a Cortado, I drink my coffee black. Either iced or hot depending on the weather!

If you could raid one fictional character’s closet, who would it be?
Ok this is probably an overdone answer but only because it’s true - got to be Rachel from Friends.

What’s one thing you want Hampden customers to know about you?
I think fashion should ultimately be about confidence. It’s an incredible tool in our toolbox to build that for ourselves. And so if that means lots of colors and crazy heels that’s amazing, and if that means a perfectly fitting pair of jeans and a white tee that is equally amazing. It’s a personal thing!

Just for fun: what’s your guilty pleasure — fashion-related or otherwise?
I love a cozy murder mystery and if it’s in the British countryside, even better!!
