Distillation is technically a legal training technique. | What is distillation? Distillation is when a smaller model is trained on the outputs of a larger, smarter model, helping it match performance for a fraction of the price. For example, Stanford and University of Washington researchers used distillation to replicate OpenAI's o1 reasoning capabilities last year for under $50.
