Three Tax Breaks, One Account
|
|
An HSA, or health savings account, is a pre-tax account you can open when you're on a high deductible health plan. What makes it different is that it gets a tax break at every step.
Going in. Contributions through payroll skip income tax, plus Social Security and Medicare.
While it sits. Many HSA providers let you invest the balance once it passes a set amount, and the growth isn't taxed.
Coming out. Spend it on qualified medical expenses and you pay no tax on the withdrawal. That's the triple tax advantage.

It Rolls Over.
|
|
An HSA is not an FSA. There's no December 31 deadline and no reset on January 1. Every unused dollar carries forward, and there's no cap on the balance.
The rollover doesn't eat into your yearly limit either. For 2026 you can still add up to $4,400 for self-only coverage or $8,750 for family coverage, plus $1,000 more at 55 or older.
It goes where you go. Change jobs or insurance and the account stays yours. Leave your high deductible plan and you can keep spending what's in it. You just can't add more.
And it covers more than most people expect. With a Letter of Medical Necessity from an independent licensed practitioner, things like fitness equipment, saunas, supplements and mattresses may be HSA/FSA eligible for qualified customers.
